Miraz Jordan is a Wellington, New Zealand-based blogger and writer with a particular interest in Internet technology: where it’s going, what’s happening, and how that affects regular folks and community groups. She co-authored the very popular book WordPress 2 Visual QuickStart Guide, and has written extensively about making websites, using the Internet, and using Macintosh computers. She recently created a new blog called Paperchains whose purpose is to help reduce the amount of wasted paper in the world and thereby reduce fuel use, pollution and other negative impacts. Jordan regularly uses Twitter, and dips in to Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Flickr. She helped organize the successful Webstock 06 and 08 Web Conferences.

In 2003 Jordan was selected as an Exceptional Adult Educator of the Year as part of a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) initiative. That initiative was Adult Learner’s Week, designed to celebrate the efforts, achievements and contributions of adult learners, educators and providers, and to promote the importance of adult learning to the wider community. She is famous for her skills in making complex topics easy to understand.

WordPress is popular for making blogs, and other kinds of websites. This course provides some background and context, then teaches participants how to upload and install the software, implement some basic settings, and create Posts, Pages and Links. By the end participants are able to set up their own simple website. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of the Mac environment and a generally high comfort level with computers is required.

WordPress Adventurer

WordPress is popular for making blogs, and other kinds of websites. This course builds on the WordPress Explorer course. Participants learn how to manage users, locate and install themes and useful plugins, a contact form, and favicon. Also explore advanced options for posts, user roles, RSS feeds and managing comments (including spam). By the end of the course participants are able to manage a WordPress website. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of the Mac environment and a generally high comfort level with computers is required. Participants must have completed WordPress Explorer or have equivalent knowledge.

WordPress is popular for making blogs, and other kinds of websites. This course builds on the WordPress Explorer and WordPress Adventurer courses. Learn how to customize WordPress themes and page templates, how to look after the database, do backups, and other advanced tasks. Participants also learn a little about PHP and MYSQL -enough to get by when working with WordPress files. By the end of the course participants are able to customize a WordPress website and know how and where to find detailed help and advice. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of the Mac environment and a generally high comfort level with computers is required. Participants must have completed WordPress Explorer and WordPress Adventurer or have equivalent knowledge. Some knowledge of and familiarity with HTML and CSS is required.
